Barb Bernstein Bio

Barbara Bernstein is the director of DanceInTimeProductions (www.DanceInTime.com) and teaches Salsa & Rueda in DC/VA/MD/Baltimore. Her dance background includes training in Foreign Folk Dance, Ballroom (Smooth and Latin) as well as Salsa. Barb formerly taught Mathematics at a small liberal arts college, and loves to teach. As a full-time dance instructor since 2001, she has developed many instructional aids for students including instructional videos, a Rhythm and Timing CD, chants describing dance moves, etc. She runs classes all over the DC and Baltimore metropolitan areas and beyond.

Barb directs several dance teams including Professional and Student Rueda Teams, and an all-Women’s Group that performs other dances including fusion presentations. These teams have represented DanceInTime at Salsa Congress Performances in Miami, New York, Puerto Rico, Washington, and Philadelphia. In addition, Bernstein has produced and performed in shows with her teams on many stages such as the Kennedy Center, the Verizon Center, the DC Convention Center, etc.

For her efforts, on 3/31/04, Barb received Washington’s prestigious “Annual Tribute To Women in Salsa” Award for “outstanding dedication to the promotion of a vibrant Salsa community.” And she was chosen to judge the “World Amateur Salsa/Rueda Championship Contest” at the first two Salsa Rueda Congresses in Miami (fall of 2004 & 2005). She also judged a competition and taught a “Mega-class” at the Salsa Rueda Competition in Vancouver Canada in April, 2005.

In past years, Bernstein’s dance group was featured in an article in the Washington Post’s Weekend Section, as well as being the cover article in the Post’s Prince Georges Section. In addition, the group appeared live on TV on the Fox Five Morning News with newscaster Holly Morris. She has written and published many articles on teaching methods and educational psychology in professional journals, and enjoys writing about dance as well! She wrote and published a short booklet to educate audiences on the history and rhythms of Salsa, Rueda, and other Latin dances. She has written articles for dance websites and electronic publications (e.g. Salsaweb, SalsaFreak, and Candela Magazine) as well as printed magazines such as Sabor and is a regular contributor to DC’s “The Scene” Magazine.

Barb is also one of the organizers of the Baltimore Salsa Meetup Group, and is Salsaweb.com’s city representative for both Baltimore and Northern Virginia.
